The Swiss Surfing Championship 2022 took place at Playa de Somo on the Cantabrian Atlantic coast, attracting a record number of participants. With around 100 athletes and a record turnout in the juniors’ division, the event marked a milestone for Swiss surfing. For the first time, the Swiss Universities Surfing Championship was integrated into the contest, adding another 20 surfers to the competition.

Day 1: Small but challenging waves

The first day of the contest started with small waves, challenging the athletes to make the best out of the tricky conditions. However, optimism remained high for better waves on the second day – and the forecast didn’t disappoint.

Day 2: Perfect waves and high tension

Day two brought clear skies and perfect waves. The athletes took full advantage of the conditions to deliver their best performances. The excitement grew significantly from the quarterfinals onwards, with many heats decided in the very last moments.

Focus on the next generation

A major highlight of the championship was the strong performance of the juniors, who brought new energy to Swiss surfing. One experienced participant even remarked how relieved they were not to have any juniors in their heat, underlining the rising level of young talent.

Beyond the competition, the championship also introduced fresh entertainment formats. Pascal Brotzer and Sandro Santschi launched the streaming segment “Sport am Knochenende,” offering humorous and insightful coverage of Swiss Surfing contests.
